Established on November 16, 1990, the Sanctuary protects 2,900 square miles of coastal and ocean waters including North America’s only coral barrier reef, the Florida Reef. From the estuarine waters of South Florida and the Florida Keys archipelago (more than 1,700 island) out to the Dry Tortugas National Park, the Sanctuary protects critical habitat in the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay, and Gulf of Mexico.
